About

Katy Bott lives in North Wales, and has been painting here since 2019.

Following a BA in Philosophy and a Masters Degree in Computer Science, Katy worked in the corporate environment for 20 years before retraining in Residential Landscape Architecture.  As a Garden Designer, she made connections between the built and natural environments, organising outdoor space to a specific brief and using drawing techniques to convey both technical details and an impression of how the completed garden might look and feel.  This was essentially an exercise in pictorial imagination, the representation of something that does not yet exist, but might in the future.

Katy moved to North Wales in 2015 and discovered the complicated freedom of painting for herself, and the fascinating difficulties of expressing the reality of our present surroundings.  The mountains of the Carneddau and the local coastal areas were the initial focus for attempts to convey a mood through the use of form and colour.  Lately, Katy has become interested in the intimacy of interiors and small architectural scenes.

Katy is more or less self-taught, having attended a short introductory community course that revealed the possibilities of various media.  Here she first encountered acrylic paint, which offered a means of expression through vivid colour.  From this point she has developed a personal style that continues to explore the power of colour to project more than the purely visual.
